The immemorial history. The wide mountain ranges invite you to enjoy nature. The green of the orange groves in fertile valleys. The blue sea. Silves is life from the Mountain (“Serra”) to the Sea (“Mar”).
With an area of 680.06 km², Silves is one of the largest and oldest municipalities in the Algarve and Portugal, where the past meets the present to make each visit a lasting memory.
The dark red of the castle's strong walls (Silves sandstone) dominates the city and the surrounding landscape. In the streets of white houses that reflect the sun and the blue sky, there are traces of the Islamic and Jewish presence and architecture made of light and art of the Gothic Church (Sé), stage of the annual Feira Medieval (Medieval Fair).
In addition to the unavoidable historic center, the Municipality of Silves has interesting tourist attractions in all its 8 parishes.
Embarking on a cultural route, in S. Bartolomeu de Messines, included in the aspiring UNESCO’S Geopark Algarvensis and in Via Algarviana, the legacy of the poet, pedagogue and politician João de Deus [1830-1896] early days and youth, author of the children learning method “Cartilha Maternal” (Maternal Booklet), can be seen and known at Casa Museu João de Deus (House Museum João de Deus). It is also possible to get to know what used to be the ancient country life at Museu do Traje e das Tradições (Museum of Costume and Traditions).
Silves inland also offers countless possibilities for enjoying nature, like going up the river Arade, in a beautiful boat trip, depending on the time of the year. Among the many activities that are available, there are visits to orange producers (orchards and factories) and to vineyards and wineries with wines internationally recognized and awarded (”Vinhos de Silves”/ Silves Wines), as well as an annual low season acclaimed event “Jazz nas Adegas” (Jazz at the Wineries), taking place between October and June.
Silves means also tasting the pleasures of the Mediterranean table such as ‘Ensopado de Javali’ (Boar Stew), ‘Cataplana’ (of chicken, fish or seafood), ‘Cozido’ (with chickpeas, beans, corn, cabbage, sausages), ‘Sopa de Lebre’ (Hare Soup), ‘Coelho Bravo Frito’ (Fried Rabbit), ‘Perdiz Estufada’ (Stewed Partridge), ‘Xerém’ (Corn Porridge), ‘Caldeirada’ (de polvo ou peixe) (Stew of octopus or fish), ‘Sardinhas Albardadas’ (Tomato Sauced Sardines), ‘Carapaus Alimados’ (Peeled Horse Mackerel)], ‘Morgado de Silves’ (fig and almond cake decorated with leaves and sugar flowers), ‘Lesmas’ (recheadas com ovos moles) (Silves marzipan cake stuffed with soft eggs) and the ‘Folhado Messinense’ (S. B. Messines puff pastry). And, of course, to complete the meal, you cannot miss the sweet, juicy and healthy oranges, which can be better appreciated during the annual Exhibition "Silves, Capital da Laranja", as well as the pomegranates, grapes and figs produced in the fertile orchard that is a large part of the Municipality of Silves, with emphasis on Algoz and Pêra. Other produce like honey, with a rosemary flavor, and arbutus brandy from mountain villages are also a must.
Finally, you cannot miss going for a dip in the sea at Armação de Pêra, where the beach season gains strength, as well as the nautical activities that underline the importance of preserving the Recife do Algarve da Pedra do Valado (Pedra do Valado Algarve Reef), while enjoying a weekend at the Festival da Caldeirada e do Mar (Fish Stew & Sea Food Festival).
